How to Make a Powerful Presentation

How to Make a Powerful Presentation

How to Make a Powerful Presentation

Can you stand in front of an audience and present? I certainly hope so! Because the ability to stand in front of an audience and make a powerful presentation is the best strategy for influencing people, selling products or services of any kind, or to creating lasting behavioral change.

If you are afraid of public speaking, then you must learn to overcome that fear. My experience making hundreds of presentations over more than 30 years has also taught me that your ability to communicate well increases your wealth, power, happiness, and influence. If you really want to grow your business and develop your brand, then learn how to make a powerful presentation. It is like networking on steroids!

1. Focus on Your audience

When you are dealing with a live audience, realize that your presentation will become a live, dynamic entity. Your audience becomes a part of your presentation. The enthusiasm that the audience brings to you will make or break your presentation.

Therefore, because your audience is so important to making a powerful presentation, remember to look at them before you launch into your speech.

Smile. Make eye contact with a few individuals.

Then ask a few questions that enroll the audience right at the beginning of your presentation. These questions should engage and involve the audience. Show them from the beginning that their concerns and problems are the focus of your presentation.

Focusing on your audience and their needs, not on your own nervousness, is the best way to ensure you give a powerful presentation.

2. Create a “Signature Speech”

If you are an entrepreneur, coach, or author you should create a “signature speech,” that you deliver for free that is designed as a marketing tool to help you reach your ideal clients.

My friend, Felicia Slattery, coined the phrase “signature speech” to describe this type of marketing presentation. In her book, Kill the Elevator Speech, Felicia explains how a giving a signature speech allows you to “build credibility, generate leads, and quickly add cash to your business.”

The fabulous thing about giving a signature speech is that you get to give it more than once. You promote it. People love it. You get hired to give it again. Remember, that every time you give your signature speech, it gets better.

You feed off the reactions from previous occasions, secure in the knowledge and the certainty that people in your audience are going to love it!
Your “signature speech” becomes what you are known for. It brands you.

3. Prepare for Success

Arrive early at the venue.

Test microphones and any equipment you are going to be using.

Use a checklist to make sure you have everything you need before you leave home.

Conclusion/Call to Action

Are you ready to make a powerful presentation? You can make a powerful presentation by following these three steps:
1. Focus on your audience
2. Create a “signature speech”
3. Prepare for success

5 Valuable Qualities of an Authentic Leader

Become an Authentic Leader

Become an Authentic Leader

5 Valuable Qualities of an Authentic Leader

As an entrepreneur you can develop and grow your community and your brand by demonstrating the five valuable qualities of an authentic leader. What is authentic leadership? According to Bill George, author of Authentic Leadership, it is built on the highest integrity, focused on results, and reflects your values and beliefs. Therefore, for long-term success, you want to be known and seen as an authentic leader in your both your off-line and on-line community.

Many people have written about leadership from Warren Bennis to Robert Greenleaf. My focus today is on authentic leadership. With authentic leadership you stand out from those who overpromise and under deliver. Your approach to your business is based on your values and integrity. In today’s world authentic leadership is welcomed and needed.  Use these five qualities of an authentic leader to develop and grow your community.

1. Authentic Leaders Make Connections

First of all, authentic leaders make connections. Part of this process involves getting out into the community and networking. Talk to peers and competitors.Find out what is important to them. You should go to conferences and symposiums. Talk to the experts.

Would you like to ask an expert a question? Then, develop a relationship with them. For example, follow them on social media. Interact with them on-line and off-line. Remember to be of value first before asking for assistance!

2. Authentic Leaders Focus on Results

Secondly, authentic leaders focuses on results. Weak leaders shame and blame. But an authentic leader zeros in on specific problems. She looks for solutions. Therefore, as an authentic leader you want to focus on achieving results that far exceed the standard solutions.

According to Kevin Kruse, “They are able to put the mission and the goals of the organization ahead of their own self-interest. They do the job in pursuit of results, not for their own power, money or ego.”

3. Authentic Leaders Act First

Authentic leaders also act first on ideas. They are first-class implementers. As an authentic leaders you find the best people for specific tasks while others are still discussing possibilities.

According to Michael Hyatt, “Leaders go first. They don’t sit on the sidelines. They don’t ask others to do what they are unwilling to do themselves. Instead, they lead by example. This is what distinguishes leaders from theoreticians and armchair quarterbacks.”

4. Authentic Leaders Know How to Ask for Help

An authentic leader knows how and when to admit you need help. An authentic leader does not pretend to be perfect. No one is.

5. Authentic Leaders Love to Learn

You will find that authentic leaders have an insatiable love for learning. They seek to improve every aspect of their lives. My personal library is full of books on personal development, history, and literature. I love to read, listen to podcasts, go to seminars, and attend workshops.

Authentic leaders find out how things work. They develop a community to help them handle situations. They also take time to do the difficult inner work that builds their self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Conclusion/Call to Action

Are you ready to develop and grow your community and brand by demonstrating the five valuable qualities of an authentic leader? Have you done the work and built the skills to be an authentic leader?

I encourage you to join me in this endeavor to develop and build your community and brand with your authentic leadership. Will you commit to using authentic leadership to make the world a better place?

Your Breakthrough Challenge: Showcase Your Professional Expertise

Showcase Your Professional Expertise

Showcase Your Professional Expertise

Your Breakthrough Challenge: Showcase Your Professional Expertise

The ability to showcase your professional expertise is an essential part of being a successful entrepreneur, coach, speaker, or author. Are you ready to face this breakthrough challenge? Are you ready to showcase your expertise in your both your on-line and off-line community? This episode of My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Program explores why and how to showcase your professional expertise.

1. What is Your Professional Expertise?

Most people think that their professional expertise is what they do. For example, they categorize themselves as a lawyer, a writer, a coach, or a speaker. I say that your professional expertise is better understood, as how you approach your work.

So, what is your approach to work?

Do you try to do everything yourself? Are you perceived as a Jack-of-All-Trades who offers generic, one-size-fits-all solutions?

Or do you approach your work as a specialist? Are you perceived as an expert who has extensive experience in your field and offers customized advice with proven results?

You want to be the latter.

2. Benefits to Showcasing Your Professional Expertise

There are many benefits to showcasing your professional expertise. For example:
(a) Your credibility increases;
(b) Your revenue and name recognition increase;
(c) You build on years of experience.

Yes, it is much better to be known as a specialist.

Think of it this way. Michael Jordan was an undisputed genius in basketball. He approached basketball methodically, with focus, excellence, and determination. There is no doubt, if anyone had a basketball question they would be told to, “go ask Michael.” He was the go-to person of his time.

Could Michael Jordan answer questions about baseball, golf, or other sports? Possibly. But his passion was for basketball. Basketball is what brought him to life every day, and it is what possessed him to continue to play basketball professionally for 15 years. It earned him 6 NBA Championships, 5 Most Valuable Player Awards, and 10 scoring titles.

Are you the MVP in your niche? Do you bring focus, excellence, and determination to your work? Do you approach your work methodically?

Aim to be a specialist. Aim to showcase your professional expertise!

3. How to Showcase Your Professional Expertise

There are several ways to showcase your expertise in both your on-line and off-line community. The way that you approach these leadership opportunities will allow your prospective clients to understand how you are different and the strengths that you bring to your work. For example;
(a) Volunteer to lead a local charitable or non-profit effort
(b) Volunteer to speak on a topic of interest
(c) Volunteer to write an informative article

For more information on showcasing your professional expertise, see the following blog posts: How to be a Recognized Expert; Be Different: Increase Your Perceived Value; What’s Your Brand? Perception is Everything

Conclusion/Call to Action

Learning to showcase your professional expertise gives you tremendous credibility, impact, and status with your online and off-line community. When you focus on your approach to work, you allow potential clients to see how you are different. You become known as someone who can provide them customized services and proven results. So, be methodical, focused, and determined in your approach. You too can be an MVP!

Start Your Speech with a Powerful Hook

Start Your Speech with a Powerful Hook

Start Your Speech with a Powerful Hook

Start Your Speech with a Powerful Hook

Are you wondering how to start your speech? Are you wondering what separates a boring speaker from one who is engaging and successful? It has been my experience, after making hundreds of presentations, that you must start your speech with a powerful hook. Having a powerful hook at the beginning of your speech marks you as a confident and prepared presenter. As an entrepreneur, you want to make a great first impression.  Remember, you can use public speaking to attract  new clients. As I mentioned in a recent blog post, speaking on a regular basis helps you quickly overcome your fear of public speaking. Having a scripted and rehearsed hook as part of your opening helps you start your speech strong.

1. What is a Hook?

What is a “hook?” A hook is defined as something designed to catch your audience’s. attention. You want to start your speech with a powerful hook. You use your “hook” to reel in the audience to focus on your message. As the presenter, once you start your speech you want to grab their attention immediately. Those first 30 seconds are crucial.

2. Examples of a Hook

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is an example of how to start your speech with a great hook.  Lincoln started by saying, “Four score and 7 years ago, our fathers bought forth on this continent a new nation.” He could have easily said “87 years ago.” But he chose to make the audience think about what he had to say.

In music, the “hook” is usually the catchy chorus that everyone remembers. I just love the hook from “Happy.” Just a few years ago everyone was walking around singing, “cause I’m happy.”  We may not have known any other words from the song, but we knew the “hook”.

Here are a few songs with my favorite hooks: (1) “I Want to Hold Your Hand” (2) “Beat It” (3) “I Will Survive.”

3. Ways to Hook Your Audience

Bruna Martinuzzi, in a recent article, discusses “12 Ways to Hook an Audience in 30 Seconds.”  A few of the hooks she mentioned are: (1) a story; (2) a quote; and (3) statistics.

Martinuzzi, also talks about the power of using a series of rhetorical questions. According to Martinuzzi, a series of questions stimulates the audience’s mind as they ponder the answers.

These are four great ways to start a speech or presentation. Telling a quick story, sharing an interesting quote or statistic, or asking a series of questions engages your audience’s emotions.  These are powerful ways to get their attention.

I prefer to use questions to engage the audience’s attention in the beginning of a presentation. I usually use two questions to pull the audience into the conversation I plan to have with them. From the beginning, I signal that this is not a lecture. We will be having a conversation.

Even if the organizer calls your presentation a lecture, let your audience know otherwise. You and the audience will be interacting with each other. Your “hook” will set the stage for the conversation to follow.

Conclusion/Call to Action

Are you ready to make a fabulous first impression with your next speech or presentation? Then you need to start your speech with a powerful hook. There are several hooks you can use to capture your audience’s attention in those first 30 seconds. For example, you could use:

  1. A series of questions
  2. A story
  3. Statistics
  4. A quote

Use a “hook” to set the stage for a powerful interaction between you and your audience.

How to Quickly Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking

Quickly Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking

Quickly Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking

How to Quickly Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking

You can quickly overcome your fear of public speaking by following a few simple strategies. Do your knees start to knock and your throat start to close thinking about public speaking? Do you imagine forgetting everything you planned to say? You can rid yourself of the overwhelming anxiety in the pit of your stomach. These symptoms of the fear of public speaking can be overcome by following the advice on this episode of My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series.

1. Being Nervous vs Being Afraid

I understand your fear of public speaking. My entire professional life as an attorney, seminar presenter, and spokesperson was all about public speaking.

As an entrepreneur, I am often asked to make remarks or speak about my business. Each time I stand up to speak, I am nervous. Being nervous is a good thing. It gives me the edge to do my best.

I do not want to be complacent about the opportunity to influence and persuade my audience. However, being nervous and being afraid are two different emotions.

2. The Solution

To help you overcome the fear of public speaking, I recommend that you what I did. Schedule yourself to speak in public on a regular basis. The more you speak, the less afraid you become. Like swimming, you just need to jump into the water! As you do more public speaking, you become a better public speaker and more confident in your abilities. You will quickly overcome your fear of public speaking after a few months of regular speaking. You realize that you will not forget your prepared remarks. You realize that the audience will not laugh at you. In fact, the audience will support and follow your lead if you provide them valuable information that helps them solve their problems.

3. Implementing the Solution

You can quickly overcome your fear of public speaking by making sure that you speak in public at least once a month. When six weeks passed without making a presentation, I felt rusty and more anxious when I returned to the stage. Make sure that does not happen to you. Make public speaking a habit. There is no better way to position yourself as an authority.

You can find opportunities to speak online or offline. I highly recommend that you start podcast. For example, you can interview guests or discuss issues of concern to your audience.

To receive more in-depth information about the power of podcasting and the power of public speaking see the following blog posts and podcasts.

You may also want to pursue opportunities offline in your local community. Local business associations, libraries, and civic organizations are always looking for speakers. Prepare a speech or presentation on an interesting topic and then schedule yourself to speak. It has been my experience that the best way to quickly overcome the fear of public speaking is to start speaking in public on a regular basis.

Conclusion/Call to Action

Are you ready to quickly overcome the fear of public speaking? If so, schedule yourself to speak regularly. The more frequently you speak the more confident you will become.  You will find that will quickly overcome the fear of public speaking when you begin to speak in public on a regular basis.

How to Attract New Clients through Speaking and Writing

Attract New Clients Through Speaking and Writing

Attract New Clients Through Speaking and Writing

How to Attract New Clients through Speaking and Writing

Imagine if you could attract new clients to your business?  What would that mean to you? Getting more prospects to buy from you and become your clients is one of the best ways to grow your business. You know how it works. When more people buy from you, depending on your margins, you make more bottom line profits. Carefully look at what you are doing currently to attract new clients to your business. Are you doing what everyone else is doing in your niche? How are your results? Have you become a commodity? Perhaps it is time to do something different, if you want better results.  Attracting new clients through speaking and writing can separate you from the masses in your niche. In this episode of My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series we discuss 3 strategies that you can implement today to attract new clients. This episode highlights how you can attract new clients through speaking and writing on platforms that you control.

(1)          The Power of the Podcast

One of the best ways to position yourself as an authority and attract new clients is to start your own podcast. Your podcast becomes your platform. As Michael Hyatt says in his seminal book, Platform-Get Noticed in a Noisy World, you need a platform (1) to attract an audience in a noisy world; and (2) to build a passionate loyalty with that audience. Your podcast allows you to give value before you receive anything from a potential client. Your podcast is your platform, not for you being the center of attention. Instead it is about sharing something of value and getting that message out to the world in a very powerful way.

According to a recent report by Edison Research, podcasts continue to grow. There has been a 75% increase in listeners since 2013. Podcasting is a smart way to connect with potential clients. It creates possibilities to reach new audiences. By speaking on a platform that you control, you can create an atmosphere of trust between you and your potential clients. Building trust is key. Remember that most people will not buy from you, until they know, like, and trust you.

For more in-depth information on starting your own impactful podcast look at the following resources: Podcasting Power; How to Easily Start Your Own Awesome Podcast; How to Avoid Making an Amateur Podcasting Mistake; Start Your Speech with a Powerful Hook.

(2)           The Power of the Free Teleseminar/webinar

Like podcasts, a webinar/teleseminar provides a powerful link between you and potential clients. The promise of in-depth training will attract those interested in the topic. The free webinar/teleconference provides you with an opportunity to provide great service. This is another powerful way to develop a relationship with your clients. Dexter and I use this strategy to attract new clients during our live weekly teleseminar series. Our live weekly teleseminar series, along with podcasts and our blog help keep our clients as long-term consumers of the products, services, and experiences that we offer.

For more in-depth information on the value of using speaking and writing to attract new clients, see: Write, Speak, Broadcast: 3 Strategies for Success in 2017.

(3)          The Power of the Blog

Starting a blog to consistently provide high quality information that is relevant to your target client is another way to attract new clients. A blog is a fabulous platform to showcase your expertise. Writing in-depth, 500-800 word, blog posts allows you to engage with your clients and offer your expertise in a non-threatening manner to potential clients. WordPress has become standard for establishing blogs. It is easy to set up and use. Here is a link to a recent post on setting up a blog that is a platform that you own and control. Once you blog created, then you must work to create an authority site. By authority site, I mean a place where you showcase your expertise and build a following for your ideas. Attract new clients to your blog with irresistible, relevant, and engaging content. For more in-depth information on the power of the blog, look at the following resources: How to Quickly Start an Awesome BlogA Behind the Scenes Look at Blogging Made Easy; 12 Sources for Great Blog Content Ideas.

Conclusion/Call to Action

Learning to attract new clients through speaking and writing gives you opportunities to expand and grow your business in ways you never thought possible. Creating and building your own platforms using speaking and writing will get you noticed in ways that you never imagined. As you emerge as the authority and thought leader in your niche you become a magnet to your target clients.

Remember:

1.   The power of the podcast

2.   The power of the free teleseminar/webinar

3.   The power of the blog

These 3 strategies will attract new clients through speaking and writing. Then watch as your bottom line profits improve.

How to Easily Create Excellent Information Products

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle

Imagine having a process that helps you easily create excellent information products, like your blogs, podcasts, books, and courses. Creating information products from scratch can seem daunting.

When I first began creating information products, it took much too long. But when I broke it down into a 3-step process, it suddenly became a lot easier. This 3-step process is now a habit that allows me to easily create excellent information products. You can do the same thing.

Step 1: Conduct Research

There are a few things you need to research before you even write the first word. Expand your search beyond the internet.  Check out books from the library and consult industry experts. Do as much research as possible to make sure you create an excellent product.

 ·       The Market – Most specifically, what are the gaps in the market? What questions are people asking that have not been adequately answered? What are “hot” trends right now in the market that people are focused on?

 ·       Other Products – What questions are already answered? What prices are they charging? What kind of media are they using? What are the main selling points your competitors are using?

 ·       The topic – This is by far the lengthiest and most important part. Do in-depth research on your subject to supplement what you already know. Look for little-known yet useful information.

Information Products

Easily Create Information Products

Step 2: Write an Outline and First Draft

Start by outlining all the things you will cover in your information product. If after outlining it you think that something is missing, do more research to fill in the blanks.

Once you have a solid outline, then start writing. Write as quickly as possible, with little attention to spelling or grammatical errors. The goal is to just write the first draft as quickly as possible.

After you have the first draft finished, then set the draft down and take a break. Leave it aside for a day or two. Work on something completely unrelated to creating your information product.

Step 3: Edit, Review, and Finalize

Look back on your first draft with a critical eye. Look at your work ruthlessly and cut out anything that is not necessary. Add in details that you may have missed the first time. See it from the viewpoint of your customers. Then ask yourself what this person needs to really get the answers they are looking for.

Keep refining your information product until you feel that you have an excellent product you can publish. At that point, give it to a friend or colleague to look over. Take their feedback and make any last-minute improvements.

Conclusion

You can easily create excellent information products by following this 3-step process.  Creating an information product can seem like an endless task when you are sitting there staring at a blank page. But once you break it down into research, outline, draft, edit, review and finalize, the process becomes much easier. With some practice, it will quickly become second nature!

Remember to:

·       Conduct Research

·       Write an Outline and First Draft

·       Edit, Review and Finalize

Are you struggling to bring in new clients or find speaking opportunities? Not sure what to do next in your marketing plan? There is one simple answer you probably may not have not considered:

Write a book.

It is true. This one thing—especially if it is an actual printed book rather than a Kindle or eBook—has the power to grow your business beyond your expectations. You will experience a whole new world of opportunities simply by having your name on the cover of a book.

 Authority

Imagine you are at a conference or local networking group and you meet two coaches who both specialize in business branding—something you know you need help with.

One coach says all the right things. She has been in business for years and worked with some top-notch business owners. She has great ideas for how she can help you solidify your branding.

The other has a similar history and story, with one additional bonus: she has just handed you a copy of her latest book. It is a professionally printed, substantial publication that practically exudes confidence.

Which coach do you think shows more authority in her field? The one with the book, of course. There really is nothing better when it comes to establishing your authority in any niche than having a book with your name on it.

Expertise

So why does a book speak so highly of you and establish your authority so well? Because it gives you a platform to show off your expertise. It is like being invited to present on any topic you choose on the world’s largest stage.

Not only that, but your readers are a captive audience. They are listening—in that moment—only to you. That is a powerful position to be in, and one that gives you an opportunity to really show off your stuff.

Market Reach

No matter how many readers Google sends your way, no matter how much traffic your YouTube channel receives, nothing will ever compare to the number of potential readers Amazon and other online booksellers can bring your way.

Positioned correctly, your book can reach millions of new readers, and thousands of potential clients. Combine that with the expertise and authority we know comes with being a published author, and that is a recipe for success that cannot be beat.

Better Than a Business Card

If you have ever been to a conference, you’ve no doubt collected a stack of business cards. You get home and toss them in a drawer, and six months later you throw them out, without ever having contacted the people who gave them to you.

But if one of those people handed you a book instead, what happened? You have likely read it (or at least leafed through it). You almost certainly did not throw it away. And you remember it—and the person who wrote it.

Press Opportunities

Turn on your television to any interview show, browse through Forbes, or listen to any popular podcast, and you will quickly see that most of the guest speakers and interviewees have written a book.

The fact is, interview shows depend on interesting, insightful guests to keep their audiences listening, and there is no better applicant than an author. Writing a book will open many, many opportunities for appearances that you may never have without your name on that cover.

Do you have to write a book to be successful? No. But there is no denying the fact that a published author will find she has a much easier time growing her business than the coach or speaker, who keeps putting it off until later.
