Work from Home: 3 Tips for Creating a Business Not a Job

Are you ready to work from home? Are you ready to leave your 9-5 job? Many people dream of working for themselves, being their own boss, and having the freedom to take on clients and projects they love. This dream continues even in the face of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the self-employment rate has trended downward over the past two decades. According to a recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 1994,the self-employment rate was 12.1 percent; by 2015, the rate had declined to 10.1 percent. From 1994 to 2015, the unincorporated self-employment rate fell from 8.7 percent to 6.4 percent.”

What you may not realize, though, is that there is a huge difference between building a business and being self-employed.

Business owners scale their income. Self-employed people trade dollars for hours. I know several dentists, doctors, lawyers, and technicians who are self-employed. Don't you? If the lawyer is sick and out the office, the work does not get done.

Business owners leverage the skills and talents of others. They have staff who work for them. The staff can be employees or contractors.

Self-employed people rely on their own skills. If you are the only person in your “business,” then you are self-employed.

Are you discouraged yet? Don't be. Every business owner started out self-employed. Just do not stay there. When you work from home, these three tips will help you build a sustainable business instead of another job.

 

1. Do Not Try to Do it All Yourself

Building a sustainable business requires that you leverage the talents and time of others. While it might seem cost-effective to simply do everything yourself–especially in the start-up phase when you likely have more time than money–it is the path to burnout and stress.

Instead separate your tasks into those that you love and are especially suited for (for example, marketing) and those that you dislike or not great at. Then make a solid plan to get those tasks that you dislike or are not great at doing off of your plate. If you think that you cannot afford to outsource it all right now, start with what you tend to procrastinate doing, even if it is just a few hours each month.

2. Do Not Allow Yourself to Work All the Time

The trouble with working at home is that you live at work. That means that there is no clear line between your work day and home life. Initially, I found myself caught in a never-ending cycle of work. But I quickly learned that was not a recipe for success.

Since there is always work to do, it is easy to find yourself working every available moment–often to the detriment of your family relationships. You can avoid this situation by:

  • Setting and maintaining clear work hours
  • Having an office with a door you can close when you are done
  • Scheduling time for family and other activities
  • Taking time for yourself

It is so important to find time everyday to reflect and focus on what is truly important. As stated by Kevin Kruse, author of 15 Secrets Successful People Know About, Secret #1 is “Time is your most valuable and scarcest resource.” Use some of that time for yourself. 3. Take Time to Relax, Refresh, and Renew Yourself!

Do not create a business that requires you to be “in the office” every day. At the start, you may need to be available more, but you should plan for the day when you can be “off the grid” for extended periods of time.

  • Have trusted contractors who can handle things when you are away
  • Leverage automation tools such as autoresponders and auto-webinar systems
  • Create repeatable systems so that you are not always re-inventing the wheel

While you may not be able to hit the road with no internet access for weeks at a time, at the very least you should be able to reduce your workload to a daily check-in.

 Sound impossible? It is not. with some forethought and planning, you can create a team, and systems they need, to successfully run your business without becoming overwhelmed and overworked. By January 1, you would have gained momentum and be well on your way to becoming a more fit, healthy, and happy entrepreneur. Join me on this journey!

Here are 3 healthy lifestyle choices that you can begin including in your life today.

1. Include a Daily Exercise Routine

Never forget the importance of a daily exercise routine. Per a 2014 report of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, “exercise is the countermeasure for aging.” Keeping fit is your responsibility. You do not need 60 hours of cardio or to lift 200 pound weights. A simple power walk will suffice, but do it daily and stick to it. Consistency is the key! I enjoy taking a morning walk through neighborhood. When it gets too hot or too cold, I walk inside at the local mall. If you are serious about reversing the effects of aging and maintaining your muscle mass, you may want to include the stretching routines of Miranda Esmonde-White. You can follow Miranda’s routines in her book: “Aging Backwards: Reverse the Aging Process and Look 10 Years Younger in 30 Minutes a Day.”

 

2. Pay Attention to What You Eat

You only have one body. How you feed it is up to you. A happy body needs the proper nutrients for brain power and health. Avoid foods that only drag the body down. When you eat right, you feel great. To help you prepare your body for healthy food choices, you may first want to rid your body of toxins. I recommend the10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse”, by JJ Smith. In her book, Smith emphasizes the importance of “taking control of your health by caring for your body by feeding it what it needs to be slim, healthy, and vibrant.”  The smoothies are delicious!

3. Start Your Day with Gratitude

You can choose to start your day grumpy and irritable or you can choose to start your day grateful that you were given another chance to enjoy a joyful, purposeful, loving life. The choice is always yours. Choose to wake up declaring a few things you are grateful for. Watch how this daily habit changes your day and your life. To help you understand the importance of starting your day with gratitude, read The Power of Intention,” by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Per Dr. Dyer, “Gratitude is a sacred space where you allow and know that a force greater than you is always at work and always available.”

  1. Keep Positive People Close to You

    If a negative person has made a nasty comment to you, shake it off. Then you need to call on a close friend. If that negative comment directly affects your mood, you could easily turn sour and bitter. Pretty soon your entire day has spiraled out of control. Rather than sulk and replay the negative comment over and over again in your mind, you should call a friend. Call that person who encourages you. Do not be ashamed of your bad mood. Grab your friend. Talk to them about the issue.  Then you need to let it go.

  2. Keep the Negative People Out of Your Bubble

    Sometimes the negative people are your family members. So you may not be able to rid yourself of all the negative people in your life.  But you can keep them outside of your protective bubble. Your protective bubble is that mental space  where you keep your mind, soul, spirit, and dreams safe from the naysayers. Only your supporters are allowed inside the bubble. If you are still working, and operating your business part-time, you may have negative co-workers. You must learn to keep them at a distance. You can not afford to let their negative vibe into your bubble.

  3. Just Keep Smiling

    Nothing upsets negative people as much as seeing you happy. So no matter how you may be feeling in the moment, let those haters know that they cannot get you down. Laugh if off. Smile at them.  Smiling releases serotonin. You will begin to feel better. It will lift your mood. You will begin to feel positive. To lift your mood even more, try playing some dance music. Pretty soon you will be dancing across the floor of your office.

Remember that there will always be haters around who are jealous of your success and envious of your desire to create a different lifestyle. You must protect yourself with your bubble. Surround yourself with positive people. And remember to keep smiling and dancing!

Finding time for yourself is essential to maintaining your well-being and peace of mind. As a busy entrepreneur finding time for yourself can be difficult. This is especially true during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. However, you cannot maintain the pace of running your business and helping family, friends, and your community if you are tired and stressed out. Taking time for yourself is not selfish. It will give you an opportunity to refresh and focus on what is truly important. You will also discover that you will be more productive when you find time for yourself in your busy schedule.

Sometimes you may struggle with developing the right mindset and habits that would help in finding time yourself. Old habits and patterns are sometimes hard to break. You may wish them away and want to do better. However, without practical tips and advice along with the creation of new habits, you can remain stuck in the same old place. This article presents three tips that will help you make the transition to finding time for yourself and improving your well-being. In no time, you will find that you have created new habits and mindset.

1. Schedule Your “Me” Time

Now that you understand that taking time out for yourself is necessary and important, then it is time to schedule it. It is important to keep your promise to yourself when declaring your “me” time. Set aside some time daily. If you are like many people that I know, then this may seem impossible. But guess what? You can find 15 minutes every day. You must be dedicated to your “me” time. It is just as important as your appointments with your doctors.  For example, you can take 15 minutes to meditate in the morning. Or you could go outside for a few minutes in the morning to have a soothing cup of tea as you listen to nature and relax. Perhaps you may want to spend a few minutes reading from an inspirational or spiritual book. According to the book 15 Secrets Successful People Know About, highly successful people live life from their calendar. Therefore, put your “me” time on the calendar. Remember, that if it is not on the calendar, it won't get done.  According to Kruse, Secret #3 is: “Work from your calendar, not a do-do-list.”

2. Let Others Know That You Value your “Me” Time

Once you have scheduled time in your daily calendar for your “me” time, then let everyone know you have a big, “Do Not Disturb” sign on your back. You are not available during that time. Only the most serious circumstances should cause anyone to interrupt you. After all, it is only 15 minutes. Everyone will survive without you for a while.

 3. Choose How You Start Your Day

You can choose to start your day grumpy and irritable or you can choose to start your day grateful that you were given another chance to enjoy life and love. The choice is always yours. Choose to wake up by declaring out aloud a few things you are grateful for and watch how this daily habit changes your day and your life.  Use this time to set the path for a positive productive day.

What are Affiliate Niche Site?

An affiliate niche site is one of limited and narrow focus. It contains information that is useful and interesting to its readers. If your site visitors do not find the information interesting or helpful they will just move on.  You promote products and services that are interest to people with this narrow focus. Think very carefully about the niche you work in. Start with a search on Google Keywords to see the number of searches for your particular idea.  You want to make sure that your niche sites are narrow enough. For example, travel is a broad category. However, winter ski travel to the southern Alps, would be a niche.

Get Started Creating Affiliate Niche Sites

Affiliate niche sites are not generally related to your main website. You want your main site to be an authority site. However, you can create affiliate niche sites on unrelated topics. For example during the holiday season, you may want to create shopping guides for various types of gifts. The start up process for creating niche sites is straight forward:

  1. Buy a domain name.
  2. Use a hosting service. We use and recommend Bluehost.
  3. Set up your new domain as a subdomain on the hosting server.
  4. Install WordPress.
  5. Select a theme for your web site.

Once your web site is ready you can always hire a graphic designer create a logo for you. We also recommend that use private label rights (PLR) content to help provide some of the content pages for your niche web sites.

It is important to select high value programs to promote, if you want success in affiliate marketing.  First, you must determine whether your audience will find the program is of high value. Remember that perceived value is in the eye of your potential client. This article discusses the process that you should use to select high value affiliate programs to promote.

Key Questions to Consider in Selecting High Value Programs

Consider these three questions when selecting high value programs:

  1. What Does Your Audience Want to Buy?
  2. What Are Your Competitors Selling?
  3. What Problems Can You Solve for Your Audience?

 

After you have asked yourself these three questions, then conduct the research necessary to answer the questions. You can then use that information to start your search for affiliate programs to promote. As you discover products, you should buy them and use them first, before promoting to your clients.  Try this approach whether it is a digital product or a physical product. It is important to have real experience with products that you want to promote.

Where to Find High Value Programs to Promote

You can find affiliate programs through networks like Commission Junction, or Clickbank.com.  You can also find self-run affiliate programs where  individuals  promote their products using an affiliate program run through their shopping cart like Nanacast, 1shoppingcart.com, or Amember.com.

If you are currently using a program that you love, and that you think will work for your audience, then you can contact the product creator directly to find out if they have an affiliate program. Sometimes you can find a link to their affiliate program on their web site. Try looking in the footer. Some other terms used for affiliates are “partners,” “associates” and “resellers”.

When you find potential products to promote you want to also look at what the product creator offers affiliates in terms of

(1) commission,

(2) sales support, and

(3) how they perform at customer service.

  1. How much commission do you get for each sale?

Understanding how much you can make from each sale is important because it costs money and time to promote a product. If you are only going to make a dollar on each sale, it needs to cost you much less than a dollar to get that sale.

  1. When is, the commission paid and how?

All products pay different amounts in commission. Some programs have incentives for selling more products. The typical rate for a digital product is a lot higher than for a physical product. It is common to see 50 to 80 percent commission rates for digital products. You typically see only 20 percent or less for physical products.

  1. What happens if there are product returns?

Most of the time, if something is returned the affiliate is responsible for the money. That is why most affiliate programs pay out after the guarantee time.  Other affiliate programs pay immediately. However, when a return happens you must pay back your commission. In those situations, therefore, it is wise not to spend your commission immediately.

  1. How are you permitted to market the products?

Some programs have  many rules and regulations about how their products are marketed. Be sure to read the fine print so that you know to market their product following their rules.

  1. What tools (like graphics) does the creator offer its affiliates to help with marketing?

Many independent affiliate programs are run very professionally. They will offer art work, private label content that you can edit, and even webinars and other promotions to help you make the sale. Go with programs that offer more to their affiliates and you will be able to promote easier. Affiliate programs such as Lead Magnets offer great support for private label content.

Knowing the answers to these questions can help you determine if it is a product you want to take the time to promote.  If the numbers do not work out, then you want to move on to another product.
