How to Transform from Employee to Entrepreneur
How to Transform from Employee to Entrepreneur
How to transform from employee to entrepreneur, is a question asked by many would-be entrepreneurs. As you transform from employee to entrepreneur you may struggle with feelings of powerlessness and lack of confidence in the face of the new challenges. You will need to develop a lifestyle and mindset that makes you feel confident and powerful in the situations that you face in life and in business as you make this transformation. This article addresses how to transform yourself from employee to entrepreneur using five strategies that help you to become confident, strong, and powerful. I invite you to “Step into Your P.O.W.E.R.
1. Remember Your Purpose
As you transform from employee to entrepreneur, you must remind yourself of the burning desire that brought you to this point. You had a big dream of starting a business. Remember your purpose. Continue to dream big and to act big. Join with others to make a difference. We were sent here to serve. Who are you serving? Once you begin to focus on others, and get your mind off of yourself, your passion and purpose will be re-kindled. I began to feel less nervous and fearful when I stopped focusing on details of my business plan and remembered why I wanted to serve my clients.
2. Look for Opportunities to Continue Learning
Once you become an entrepreneur you will find that school has just begun. You may have credentials that made you a great success as an employee. As an entrepreneur you will need new skills. These skills aren't often learned in university classrooms. So you must continually look for opportunities to learn that will broaden your knowledge base. Take courses and read books that fill the gaps in your knowledge. You can also learn from people who are already successful doing what you do. You must remain teachable! These opportunities for learning are essential to your transformation. These opportunities for learning help make you feel confident and powerful. As you learn new things you gain the confidence to know that you can meet the challenge of being an entrepreneur.
3. Pursue a Wealth of Relationships
As you become an entrepreneur you need to pursue and develop a wealth of relationships. The people around you are so important to your feeling of power. Are they negative? Are they telling you what you can not do? If so it may be time to stop spending time with them. You must develop relationships with people who will support you and your dream. Are they encouraging you in your change? Some of the negative people may be in your own family. Then it is harder to get away from them. But you must protect your dream! I have joined new groups like the Rotary Club and the community civic association to associate with other business and community leaders. You may want to join local service organizations in your community. Continue to network and serve.
4. Be Energetic!
As you transform from employee to entrepreneur you will probably spend longer hours working. You will be tired and pre-occupied with all that you have to do. But you will not be able to accomplish your great dreams if you are tired all the time. To combat this feeling, you need to be energetic. Move around. Feel your strength. I like to walk in the neighborhood or at the local mall in morning. I have a ritual where I jump up out of the bed, pray and meditate, then start walking. You may want to try something similar to keep your energy high!
5. Be Relentless
As you step into your power as an entrepreneur, you will leave many old habits and customs behind. You must be relentless in pursuit of the dream that is your business. Don't give up. When you stop, the results you were looking for could have been just around the corner. I encourage you to be persistent, determined, and relentless. Be excellent in all that you do. None of us is perfect. But we can be an excellent example of how to use POWER for positive change in our life and our community.
Closing Thoughts
To transform from employee to entrepreneur can be challenging. However with the proper mindset and focus you can emerge confident and powerful as you learn to step into your P.O.W.E.R.

What's Your Brand?
This episode of My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series focuses on how to develop your brand. We discuss the importance of having a brand to making your customer perceive you as: 1) trustworthy; 2) worth more money; and 3) special.
What is your customer's perception of you and your company? Your brand allows you to live in the hearts and minds of your customers. A brand builds up customer loyalty. Listen as we explain why branding is important. We also explain how you can brand yourself and your business.
What is Branding?
In Branding Small Businesses for Dummies, branding has been called the science and art of making something unique in the eye of the customer. Branding makes you different from everyone else. A brand stands for something! A great brand is easy to remember. It is usually represented by a symbol. Perhaps you are familiar with the Nike “swoosh” symbol. Is your business represented by a symbol? Do you have a logo? We are also familiar with the “red” can and the distinctive font on the front of a can of Coca Cola. All of this is branding. Branding is all about the promises that you make and the promises that you keep. You tell your customer all about you and your business with everything you do. Your brand becomes your identity!
Why is Branding Important?
Branding is important because it allows you to stand out in a crowd. It differentiates you from potential competitors. Even if your product is the same as someone else's, branding makes your product special. Remember that is your customer's perception that is the key. How does your customer perceive you, your product or service? That perception becomes your brand. Are you always late in delivering a service? Then your brand is “being late.”
What if You Developed a Brand?
Just think what would happen if you had a powerful brand? You would become memorable! Your past customers would be your greatest sales people. They will absolutely insist on you and only you and your product and services. Your customers will have loyalty to you.
Conclusion
Branding is an important part of your business strategy. It allows you to stand out in a crowd and develops loyalty from your customers. Your branding gives you an identity in the hearts and minds of your customers.
We will continue this discussion on our podcast series and on this blog.
Let us hear from you about how you have branded yourself and your company.

Branding: The “ABCs” of Branding
Branding: The “ABCs” of Branding
Branding is an essential component of your business strategy. Being branded separates you from all the others in your area of expertise. For example, you are no longer “a consultant.” You are now “the 24/7 Consultant.”
As an entrepreneur, it is often difficult to separate yourself from the company. Therefore, everything that you do becomes associated with the company! So be aware of the impressions that you are making even when you are “off-duty.”
Branding sets you apart from others who offer a similar product or similar. Your brand separates you from the crowd. In other words, a brand makes you distinctive! Here are a few basic “ABCs” to help you in developing your distinctive brand.
“A” is for Achievement
Branding by highlighting your achievements is excellent. We are all familiar with the famous athletes like, Cam Newton, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Peyton Manning, who are branded by their achievements. You don't need to be a world-class athlete to use your own achievements for to brand yourself.
Take a few minutes and think about your area of expertise and how your achievements relate. Perhaps you are a marathon runner. That shows grit and determination. Great traits for an entrepreneur. For example, you may have written a book. Many people want to write a book. Most do not. I highlight that I am an author in branding myself. The fact that I have written a book differentiates me. Your brand should highlight your achievements to differentiate you!
“B” is for Benefits
Branding is all about the promises that you make to your customers. So, make sure that your brand highlights the distinctive benefits that you offer. Branding with your unique offering allows you to stand out in the crowd. How do you help your clients and customers achieve better results?
What results can your client expect when working with you? Will they be thinner? Will they become richer? Will they be smarter? Your brand should speak the language of the benefits that you offer.
“C” is for Customer-focused
You should focus on the customer experience in developing your brand. Remember, in branding it is always the customer's perception of you that matters. Your brand rises and falls on that perception. So your brand goes beyond a name and a logo.
Think about the other ways that you interact with customers and clients. For example, branding involves how you answer the phone. Branding is about how you handle customer complaints and customer service. Your brand must be customer-focused.
Conclusion
Branding is essential to building and growing your business. Therefore, it is a key component of your business strategy. In developing your branding remember these “ABCs”:
- “A” is for Achievement based branding
- “B” is for Benefits of your product or service
- “C” is for Customer-focused experiences
By following these “ABCs” of branding you are on your way to establishing a distinctive and sustainable brand. You can work with us to help develop your branding strategy in “The Strategic Pathway to Success Program.” Let us help you make your brand powerful.

3 Tips for Writing Better Blog Posts
3 Tips for Writing Better Blog Posts
Would it help you, if you had three tips for writing better blog posts? I have decided to tackle this issue after reading so many blog posts that disappoint me!
Have you ever started reading a blog post and had to stop half way through? I know that I have. Blog posts sometimes suffer from 1) misspelled words, 2) blatant selling, or 3) lack of organization. If it is a really bad blog post it has all three problems.
When these problems occur your personal branding and professionalism suffer. So, let's talk about how to address these problems in blog posts. When you solve these problems with your writing you will get more readers.
So, today I am writing about three common problems with blog posts and provide three tips for writing better blog posts.
I. Misspelled Words
Misspelled words in blog posts are a real pet peeve for me. I must confess that I have been known to misspell a few words myself. Oops, just had to correct a misspelled word!
My concern is about blog posts where there are 5 misspelled word in a 5 sentence paragraph. Please do your readers a service by using spell check. This kind of error could have been caught by simply proof reading your article before publishing.
Remember to check your spelling. That is the first tip for writing better blog posts.
II. Blatant Selling
Blog posts that blatantly sell products or services are another turnoff for me. If they bother me, it probably bothers your readers also. I understand that you are in business to sell. But those of us that take time to read for information want you to at least try to share something helpful.
So, please leave the blatant selling to your sales copy. Let your blog posts be places of problem solving.
III. Lack of Organization
Blog posts that lack an organizing principle are confusing to read. Some posts are just a huge blob of print. These types of posts do not use 1) headings; 2) paragraphs; or 3) bullet points. It is very difficult to follow the narrative of the posts without some basic cues about the topic.
Master blogger and bestselling author Michael Hyatt in “Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World” also discusses the need for clear cues in your writing as you move from one topic to the next.
Conclusion/Call to Action
If you want to increase the number of people reading your blog, then follow these three tips for writing better blog posts.
Hopefully your blog will not suffer from the following problems:
- Misspelled words
- Blatant selling
- Lack of organization
When a post contains two or three of these problems it is often impossible to read.
To address these issues, remember to:
- Use spell check and proof read
- Save the selling for your sales page
- Remember to provide visual cues in your posts such as paragraphs, heading, and bullet points
In the digital age, all of your content is always available. It hurts your personal branding to produce sloppy work.
Let us hear from about your pet peeves in this era of digital marketing.

Building a Great Business Team

Building a Great Business Team
In this episode of My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series we discuss the importance of building a team to support your success. Experience and history tells us that you cannot build anything of significance without a team. In today's episode we discuss the lessons of team building from examples such as Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, and Abraham Lincoln. You are also building a business of significance.
You will not be the success that you want to be or deserve to be without a business team. A business team will support you. A team will help make your dreams a reality. In today's episode we also discuss (1) what is a team; and (2) why a team is so important. We also share the one easy step that you must take if you want to build a great business team.
Do What You Do Best!
Learning to delegate can be a challenge for a new entrepreneur. But you must quickly learn that you can not do everything in your business. For one thing, you would exhaust yourself. I remember when I was a new manager and tried to keep too much control over the written documents that we were responsible for producing each month. I quickly realized that I could not by myself possibly generate the volume of work required. I needed to rely on my team to produce the first drafts. I would then edit and polish the work. Do you find yourself facing a similar dilemma? Yes, I probably could have written a better first draft than any of the team members. But I came to realize that their first draft was good enough.
What are you doing in your business that someone less talented could do? What are you doing that is not the best use of your time and talents? What are you doing that someone with a completely different skillset is more qualified than you to do?
As you think about your business, ponder on the types of people that you will need on your team to help you achieve your long term business goals? In our online business we quickly realized that we needed (1) a tech person to build and support the website; (2) a coach/mentor to show us the way; (3) a graphic designer to help with the design of the website and marketing materials. As the business continues to grow, we will continue to add more people to provide specialized support.
Remember: “Do What You do Best! Let Your Team Do the Rest.”

3 Tips for Seniors Starting an Online Business
3 Tips for Seniors Starting an Online Business
Seniors starting an online business will discover that many other baby boomers are doing the same thing. Starting an online business is a great way for seniors to: (1) supplement their retirement; (2) share their passion with those who have similar interests; and (3) keep their minds and bodies active.
This article will discuss this growing phenomenon of seniors starting an online business. The ease for seniors of starting a business using a computer and the internet is tempting. The entry for seniors starting an online business has never been lower. Unlike starting a brick and mortar business, starting an online business is comparatively cheap. We will share 3 tips that seniors can use to start an online business.
1. Start Your Online Business While You are Still Working
The number of seniors starting online businesses is steadily increasing. According to an article on small business trends, seniors are outperforming those who are 20-34 in starting businesses. A large percentage of new online start-up businesses are formed by entrepreneurs 55 years old and older. While it may be surprising to some, it was not surprising to us. We started our business when we were almost 55 years old. Like many baby boomers, we started our business while we were both still working. I (Pam) have been able to retire, and devote myself to growing our business. Starting your business while you are still working, gives you time to learn the ropes while still earning money from your job. Then when you retire you can supplement your retirement with the income from your online business.
2. Share Your Expertise and Passion
Seniors starting an online business can use the knowledge and expertise they have gained from their careers or hobbies. Begin with your current expertise as you consider the type of online business that you want to start There are lots of opportunities for freelancers with the explosion of online businesses. You can look for books and articles on your chosen specialty to be sure that it is a topic that people are willing to pay for. You want to make sure that your passion and expertise is a topic that is profitable. As an online entrepreneur you will have an opportunity to build your business by blogging, affiliate marketing, creating information products, or online courses. You may want to become a freelance writer. Explore doing (1) what you know; (2) what you love; or (3) best of all something that combines both!
3. Enjoy the Lifestyle of an Internet Entrepreneur
Seniors starting an online business are often motivated by the idea of having the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world. I know that idea appealed to both my husband and me. The idea of sharing what we know about branding, marketing, and getting started online really fascinated us. Like most other baby boomers, we are refusing to retire like our parents and grandparents. The days of accepting a gold watch and then reclining in a chair for the rest of our lives is over. Today's seniors are active, both mentally and physically. We are leaving our footprints on the world. But best of all, seniors are enjoying the innate freedom that comes from being an online entrepreneur. At approximately 80 million (and growing), today's seniors are meeting their retirement years with entrepreneurial mindsets. Seniors are starting online businesses using the computer and the internet to restart their lives and supplement their retirement incomes. The freedom that you can enjoy stems from having more time to devote to pursuits besides work and focusing on making money for your retirement.
Conclusion/Call to Action
There are several excellent reasons for seniors to start an online business. For example, you can
- start your business while you are still working to learn the ropes while you still have an income
- share your passion and expertise
- enjoy the lifestyle of an internet entrepreneur.
What type of online business will you start? Let us know. We would love to hear from you! Let us show you how to jumpstart your successful online business with The Strategic Pathway to Success Program.

Network Like a Pro!
To network like a professional often requires you to change your mindset. In this interview with business consultant, Leslie Cardinal, you will learn all about the proper networking mindset and attitude. Leslie also shares advice on (1) why we should network; (2) some common mistakes in networking; and (3) helpful tips to relieve your jitters when you network. If you want to become a savvy networker, listen to this interview on My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series to learn how to network like a pro!
Network Where Your “Tribe” Hangs Out
You need to network where your “tribe” hangs out. Where does your “target market” or “tribe” hang out? Are they on-line? If so, where? You need to go where they go. If they are on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest then make sure that you are posting relevant information. If they are in your local area, then go out to meet them. Engage with your potential clients by asking questions and getting to know them. Learn from them. They have a lot to teach you. To network like a pro, you should commit to reaching out on a consistent basis to establish relationships. It is the relationships that you establish that will help build your authority.
Become a Problem Solver
To network like a pro you need to do more than post articles and put links to your website. You need to make a habit of commenting, connecting, and offering solutions to issues. Every solution that you offer does not have to relate to something that you are selling. You will build your credibility if you show genuine interest in solving problems.
Become a Connector
To network like a pro you should aim to connect people who can help each other. For example, if you meet someone who is looking for a graphic designer, you can connect them with the person who designed your logo. We often find ourselves recommending products and services of the people who have helped us build our business. When you help your “target market” and connect them with useful information, it positions you as an authority.

Conclusion
As you learn to network like a pro by (1) networking where your “tribe” hangs out; (2) becoming a problem solver; and (3) becoming a connector, you will reap many benefits. For example, as you build connections with them, you are building your authority. You are also creating a tremendous boost for your business.

Build Your Authority Status with Creative Content
Build Your Authority Status with Creative Content
Producing creative content is one of the best ways to build your authority status. For example, one blog post could potentially reach thousands of people and establish you as a credible player in your area of expertise. You can leverage the power of the internet to create, share, and publish authority boosting content. There are several ways to do this. This article will discuss a few.
Write Blog Posts
One of the best ways to produce creative content is to have your own website where you write your own blog posts that present top quality information. At My Biz Dream Team we consistently publish 2-3 high quality posts each week. Be sure to share what you know. Answer your audience's question. You can also talk about industry news and provide solutions for your audience's problems. Make sure that the blogs that you produce are consistently of good quality and value. Let your professionalism and expertise shine through in the content.
In addition to writing blog posts for your own website, you may want to guest blog. Find a reputable industry leader who creates value-laden content. Once you have the opportunity to guest blog make the most of it. Be sure to have a clear call to action that will motivate the readers to click through and visit your website.
Another way to use blogs to your advantage is to make comments on other authoritative blogs. Be sure that your comments are substantive. This is a great opportunity to be seen in a positive light that positions you as an authority.
Publish a Book
Publishing a book is a fantastic way to establish your authority status. Nothing opens more doors for other opportunities like a book. You position yourself above others in your niche by writing a book. Digital publishing has never been easier. Opportunities to publish on Kindle or Create Space did not exist 20 years ago. Don't wait any longer to take advantage of this opportunity to make a name for yourself in a very big way. You should start brainstorming today and writing your book. If you don't have time to write it all down, speak it. That's how we created one of our books, The Book on Investing: Create the Life of Your Dreams. We made an outline of topics we wanted included in the book. Then we recorded the conversation we had about those topics. Our book emerged from the recorded conversation. It made the idea of “writing” a book much easier. You can try it our way or you can hire a ghost writer to help you.
Hold Live Events
Consider holding live events like webinars or teleseminars to provide value-laden information to people who want to learn more from you. These live events work very much like a published book to establish your authority status. Every Wednesday, we hold a live teleseminar training program: My Biz Dream Team: Opportunity Wednesday Training Series. People tend to naturally give authority status to people who are published and to people who “teach” and speak in public. Holding your own live events gives your credibility and authority status a huge bump.
Conclusion
There are so many opportunities to create high quality, authority building content today. You should take advantage of the power of the internet to: (1) write blog posts; (2) publish a book; and (3) hold live events. You may also want to consider publishing articles in traditional magazines and newspapers. These opportunities and others allow you to showcase your expertise. They also help you to become recognized as an authority figure in you niche.
